Today's ride began well with a gentle westerly. Not much out of the ordinary was happening, when this woman (who had jumped out of a car travelling in the opposite direction) started yelling and screaming at me. I thought she was deranged until I could make out that she was calling out, "Are you Sean, are you Sean Egan?" She turned out to be one of Mum's work friends, Norma (and her friend Peter), from Linacre Hospital. After a lot of screaming, some photos and excited conversation we both headed our separate ways. Quite freaky when you think about it! At about the 110 km mark, the wind turned and the next 65 km was hard work. It was especially nice to get to Eucla, where we had views of the ocean for the first time since Perth. Eucla sits high on some cliffs and has some panoramic vistas of the Great Australian Bight. Unfortunately, the staff at Eucla Hotel/Motel had no idea we were coming, so a Motel room was not available. They did, however, give us a budget room for nothing, which was very kind but also very basic. After some recovery, we showered in the camp showers and then headed to the bar to watch the Hawks/Saints game. Not a lot of interest in that after the second quarter so we headed back to our dorm. It felt like school camp - 3 single beds with soft mattresses and the toilet a world away. Last changed: Sep 22 2008 at 5:32 PM Back |
